Are you locked into your family Karma? Sometimes, I can’t help but associate Family Constellations with a notion of Karma. Karma is a concept in Hinduism and Buddhism. Karma is the relationship between one’s action and the consequences following that action. The common saying is “what goes around comes around.” How karma works is like “you are getting the fruits because you planted the seeds.” Karma, the principle of the chain of cause-and-effect, is not limited to one’s current life. It also signifies the consequences of all the actions of a person in their past and previous lives. The concept of karma helps me to see the generational patterns and sources of the issue and strength in the family constellations. Something that happened a few generations back has become a trigger of what is happening in the present day. There is no surprise in finding a correlation between two. As I understand it, what falls onto me as a burden in my life is reflecting the unresolved issue or emotional entanglement in the family system. What happened to your ancestors is not yours, and yet, it continues impacting your life. An unfavourable pattern is passed on. Most likely, I will repeat the pattern that is familiar—to be loyal to my family regardless of the consequences on my health and state of mind. When I am able to see the repetition in my family system, the shift occurs. Family Constellations bring these hidden dynamics to light. Family constellations invite the restoration, wholeness, and balance in the family system. It is not about finding out what exactly happened to them, revisiting the painful experience, or changing your karma. Of course, not everything can be reduced into Karma. Karma is one way to understand so that we begin to stop continuing ancestors’ pattern to complete their unfinished stories and suffering. With clarity and dignity, we move with a deeper flow of love. You are planting the new seed with love and honor. By doing so, the thing once considered a burden begins to fall away. This is how we turn the karma, planting a seed for the future generations. Begin your exploration into Family Karma by journaling the following points suggested by Ashok Bedi, a clinical professor of psychiatry and Jungian analyst who wrote the book “Retire Your Family Karma: Decode Your Family Pattern and Find Your Soul Path and Path to the Soul.” These questions highlight some of the adverse effects of family patterns that can and do persist for more than two generations. 1. Describe your grandparents’ relationship. What similarities and/or differences do you recognize between their relationship and your intimate relationship(s)? 2. How do/did each of your grandparents react emotionally to various situations? Do you find yourself reacting in similar ways, even though your reactions don’t make any sense to you? 3. What physical ailments do you have that “run in the family” for which there appears to be no medical treatment? 4. What sort of work do you do? Who among your older relatives (parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles) does/did the same sort of work you do? What do/did your older relatives say about the line of work you are in? 5. What are the “ancestral dramas “in your family line? (For example, “Men in this family always/never…” “Our family does…” “The women in our family…”“Children are supposed to…”) 6. How do you relate to, or what do you feel about, your family traditions? (For example, you like them; you rebel against them; they give you a sense of security; they stifle you; you believe you have to uphold them; etc.) 7. What functional as well as dysfunctional coping strategies do you share with other members of your (extended) family? For example, would be anticipating situations or consequences of actions. 8. Do you observe any of your emotional or behavioral patterns; being able to laugh rather than throw a tantrum, denial, blaming others, resorting to temper tantrums, excessive drinking, or gambling to manage stress. 9.If you have been in counseling or psychotherapy, what issues have you worked on? How effective has your counseling or psychotherapy been in resolving your issues of concern? 10. Have you had a dream in which your father or mother, or grandfather or grandmother, does something noticeably out of character? (i.e., differently than they act in waking life). When you notice any pattern in your family system, it is an opportunity to shift this generational pattern that doesn't serve your life.
